What We Believe

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
  he came down from heaven,
  was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
  and became truly human.
  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
  he suffered death and was buried.
  On the third day he rose again
  in accordance with the Scriptures;
  he ascended into heaven
  and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again in glory
  to judge the living and the dead,
  and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
  is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism
  for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
  and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Articles of Religion

The Articles of Religion of the Methodist Church is a summary of our understanding of Christian faith. Drawn from the Articles of Religion of the Church of England and adapted for Methodists in America, it addresses questions about our view of scripture, salvation, worship, and a variety of other topics. Click here to learn more.

The Confession of Faith

The Confession of Faith comes from the Evangelical United Brethren Church, which merged with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church. Similar to the Articles of Religion, it speaks to our beliefs about God and God's work in the church. It is especially important for its witness to our commitment to "strive for holiness" and to receive the gift of "perfect love." Click here to learn more.

Our beliefs are grounded in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that "Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation" (Article V of the Methodist Articles of Religion) and that the Bible should be "received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice" (Article IV of the Confession of Faith). We emphasize faithful reading of Scripture both in worship and in prayer because we believe that through the Scriptures the Holy Spirit draws us into communion with God.

Worship with Us

There is an ancient Christian motto—lex orandi, lex credendi—that means "the rule of prayer is the rule of belief." That means the best way to learn what we believe is through our shared worship. Join us on Sunday morning to see our faith in its fullest expression.

Talk with Us

While this is what we teach and believe, not everyone is ready to accept all these claims. We understand! We want to walk with you as you get to know God’s love through Jesus Christ. If you have questions about our beliefs or your faith and want to begin that conversation, stop by for worship or email us at welcome@fultonumc.org.
